History of Tiger Institute Partnership

An Unprecedented Partnership

Tiger Institute is a first-of-its-kind partnership between two like-minded organizations.

In late 2009, University of Missouri entered into an unprecedented partnership with Cerner Corporation called Tiger Institute for Health Innovation. The new organization had an ambitious goal: to build a strong foundation of information technology (IT), innovation, and partnership to transform health care.

MU provides teaching, research, and service to the people of Missouri. MU boasts a renowned health system, MU Health, which includes five inpatient facilities, more than 50 clinics, and three health science schools. The core mission of the system is to advance health of all people, especially Missourians. Through exceptional clinical service, MU Health supports the education and research mission of the university.

Similarly, Cerner, an international leader in health IT, focuses on seeking breakthrough innovation that will shape health of tomorrow.

Together, we are invested in achieving common goals. Working side by side, MU and Tiger Institute leadership teams deliver value through commitment to a single strategy, such that MU Health Care becomes a leading academic system of care.

Exceeding Expectations

In early 2010, the Tiger Institute and its board of governors launched an aggressive plan to advance our position in the marketplace through rapid IT adoption. We have delivered an integrated electronic health record (EHR), connected providers, engaged patients, and received recognition for quality and value.

By November 2013, we had achieved Meaningful Use and Stage 7 recognition by HIMSS Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model across both our inpatient and outpatient facilities.

Additionally, in October 2015, we were the proud winners of the HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence, which recognizes outstanding achievement of organizations who have used health IT to substantially improve patient outcomes while achieving return on investment.

In July 1 of 2015, MU and Cerner agreed to extend the Tiger Institute relationship for 10 years and reset goals, objectives, and strategies to lead us into the next decade.

2016 and beyond…..as the goal to execute on the core EMR, patient portal, HIE, HealtheIntent was met, the focus shifted to becoming a broader resource for Missouri and beyond. With the platforms, policies, and agreements in place, it is now important to focus on growing platforms and leveraging the data in them to excel in clinical outcomes, value based care, research and cost efficiency.
