The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recently announced that the University of Missouri Health System has been selected as an AAMC Clinical Care Innovation Challenge Award winner. The award recognizes AAMC member teaching hospitals and medical schools that have implemented or are developing programs to address clinical care innovations, including new delivery, payment and training models, which integrate education and research to improve value and quality.

Jerry C. Parker, PhD, associate dean for research at the MU School of Medicine, led MU’s application, “Leveraging Information Technology to Guide Hi-Tech, Hi-Touch Care” (LIGHT2). Parker is the principal investigator of the LIGHT2 project, which is funded through a Health Care Innovation Award from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

MU and the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation created LIGHT2, a comprehensive technology suite that empowers patients with information to proactively manage their care, and enables providers to continuously improve their care delivery. The program serves approximately 10,000 Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

“The concept of LIGHT2 is to incorporate advanced health information technology, evidence-based care coordination and data analytics from electronic health records to improve population health,” said Parker, who is also co-director of the MU Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and co-principal investigator of the MU Coulter Translational Partnership Program. “The ultimate goal is to provide better care and better health at a lower cost.”

Parker and the MU Health System will be recognized at the sixth annual AAMC Integrating Quality Meeting: Improving Value through Clinical Transformation, Education and Science, to be held June 12 and 13 in Rosemont, Ill.
