MUHC named Most Connected by US News & World Report
COLUMBIA, Mo. ― University of Missouri Health Care was the only hospital in Columbia or central Missouri, and one of only three hospitals in the state to make U.S. News and World Report’s prestigious Most Connected Hospitals 2012-13 list.
Only 156 hospitals nationwide, including MU Health Care, received the Most Connected designation.
The rankings were announced this week by U.S. News and World Report.
Achieving “Most Connected” status means University of Missouri Health Care has met standards that identify the health system as a leader in quality clinical care and the implementation of electronic medical records (EMR).
“During the past few years, we have made significant advancements in implementing the electronic medical record across our health system,” said Joanne Burns, chief information officer at MU Health Care.
“Two years ago, we began using a bar-coding system with unique bar codes for patients, medications and nurses,” Burns said. “Bar codes are scanned to ensure that the correct medication is provided at the right time, in the right dose and to the right patient. We have also introduced a computerized provider order entry system that allows physicians to enter medication orders directly into a computer, eliminating the potential for misreading handwriting on paper orders.”
In addition to “Most Connected” status, MU Health Care was the only hospital in Columbia or central Missouri to make U.S. News and World Report’s prestigious list of best hospitals announced this week. In addition, MU Health Care’s ear, nose and throat program was rated among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
University of Missouri Health Care was also the only Columbia or mid-Missouri hospital recognized as “high performing” in any medical specialty.
MU Health Care, recipient of the 2011 Missouri Quality Award from the Excellence in Missouri Foundation, was also recently recognized for the second consecutive year as one of the nation’s Most Wired health systems according to the 2012 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue of the American Hospital Association’s “Hospitals & Health Networks” magazine.
